SEASIDE SERENITY

This project, a collaboration between Breana Graham Landscape Architecture and builder Robert Plumb Fix, transformed an underutilised backyard into a picturesque outdoor retreat. The design expertly blends bold architectural elements with layered planting and multi-functional zones, such as the reimagined boat deck, creating a dynamic space that seamlessly balances aesthetics with practicality. The space caters to both adults and children, offering a playful area for kids to explore different levels while adults relax and enjoy the surroundings. Flexible seating, adaptable shading and year-round usability enhance its versatility, making it an inviting, sustainable haven for entertaining.

The client requested a functional, visually appealing space suitable for large gatherings and a safe, engaging environment for their growing grandchildren. Existing features including the boat deck were integrated into the design, with the addition of two pergolas – one for a BBQ area and the other for a balcony, both adorned with climbing plants. Built-in seating and cantilevered umbrellas further improved usability.

Sustainably sourced materials like timber, burnished concrete and drought-tolerant plants ensure low maintenance and durability. The use of permeable paving, natural drainage solutions and energy-efficient features like ceiling heaters and fans contributed to the space’s environmental responsibility. The result is a beautiful, functional and sustainable outdoor space
