Crystal Pools

Almost everyone has dreamed of their perfect pool, replete with all the luxuries that make it perfectly suited for the way they want to live. When it’s time to turn that dream into a spectacular new backyard feature, you need someone you can depend on to provide real expertise and a genuine passion for your project. Sydney Pool + Outdoor Design’s William Neilson speaks with Andrew Good, Founding Director of Lap of Luxury Pools, to learn how he and his team go about helping people take the plunge and build their dream pools.

Lap of Luxury Pools has been building premium, quality swimming pools in Sydney since 1994. The company specialises in designing and building custom concrete pools of every imaginable variety. Whether that be a plunge pool, infinity edge pool, suspended pool or one with an integrated cover, the team can effortlessly create something to suit every vision and style. Good prides himself on delivering exceptional results to every client, every time.

CHARTING A COURSE
Every pool construction project begins at the same place, by establishing a clear vision of what the client wants from their dream pool. A typical first meeting with a client focuses on understanding their needs and preferences and assessing how those ideas align with the design of the new or existing home being developed. Some clients want a beach area for the kids, while others desire a spa that only the adults can enjoy. Regardless, clients are always aware of what they like, so it is the job of Good and his team to understand their requirements and work with them to achieve this vision.

Most customers have visions derived from what they have seen on various social media platforms, but there are still many who arrive with a blank canvas in search of expert guidance on what they can achieve. As it turns out, the best tool for showing clients what their finished build will look like is through a collection of the company’s completed projects.

No matter where a client is coming from, Good and his team do everything they can to help the client solidify their vision.

It is always easiest make changes to a project on paper, so it is during this early phase of the process that there is the most opportunity to make dramatic improvements.

Good relates an example of one such situation, “Lap of Luxury Pools is currently completing a project on Sydney’s Northern Beaches where the initial scope was to renovate an existing freeform pool built in the 80’s. Many other builders were engaged to quote. When Lap of Luxury Pools were invited back, we noted that the old pool had structural issues and had been renovated twice over the years and so suggested a new pool and new shape inside the old pool. The client appreciated the advice and agreed to a brand-new pool and surrounds creating a mammoth backyard transformation.”

BRAVING THE WAVES
Well-developed ideas evolve into well-crafted designs, but those designs must be brought to life before their owners can truly enjoy them. Along the way, a variety of challenges and constraints must be navigated as part of the construction process. The selection of appropriate materials is integral, which is why Lap of Luxury Pools maintains strong relationships with suppliers and trades that represent the best products in the industry.

Whether it’s tiles, glass, pavers or fencing, the company can facilitate an appointment with an industry leader to help clients select the perfect product from among the best options.

The size, shape, and sloping of the surrounding terrain is another critical factor that has a significant impact on how it is built. Good explains just how big an impact the terrain has on a pool’s construction, “adapting and creating a unique design is key to the ultimate swimming pool design outcome.

Terrain has a huge impact on the overall design and cost of the project. If I am invited to offer design advice on a sloping block overlooking bush where having a partial or fully formed pool is 100% likely, I would be drawing from my expertise and showcasing similar projects with fantastic outcomes. The same goes with cliff edge or ocean front pools. That said, the cost of completing such a project would far exceed that of a regular in ground pool on a level block.”

Pool safety also can’t be ignored, with the company engaging with quality fencing companies early in the process. This ensures compliance, simplifies the decision-making process for clients and delivers stunning visual outcomes.

THE FINAL LAP
It wouldn’t be a luxury pool without those finishing touches that make a big splash. What that means is going to vary for each client, but some common themes include spa jets, bubblers, fully tiled pools and automation systems. It used to be that only a small number of pools would feature automation, now it’s at least half. There’s also not a pool today that the company has built without heating, perfect for year round enjoyment. Landscaping can’t be neglected either, which is why the team partners with the best landscapers in the business. Good offers some parting advice on ensuring your new pool lives up to your expectations. “I would say engage a reputable pool builder or landscape architect early in the process. A pool builder can advise on what can or can’t be achieved and provide solid advice or guidance in line with the client’s budget.”
